Cyber insurance security requirements: what businesses should verify before renewal

Cyber-insurance questionnaires often turn security controls into yes-or-no questions. Your environment is rarely that simple.

The objective before renewal should be to understand what is actually implemented, what populations are covered and what evidence supports the answer.

MFA

Verify MFA for email, remote access, administrators and critical applications. Look for excluded accounts, weak exceptions and service identities that create alternate paths.

Endpoint detection and response

Confirm EDR is deployed to the intended devices, agents are healthy and alerts have an owner. A purchased license is not the same as complete operational coverage.

Backups and recovery

Document what is backed up, whether backup credentials are adequately separated, whether copies are protected from destructive attacks and when restoration was last tested.

Email security

Review phishing controls, mailbox forwarding, impersonation protection and domain authentication. Business email compromise frequently targets identity and payment workflows rather than malware alone.

Privileged access

Know who has administrative rights, whether users have separate admin identities, how privileged access is authenticated and whether stale privileges are removed.

Vulnerability and patch management

Define how vulnerabilities are identified, prioritized, remediated and excepted. Include internet-facing services and third-party applications, not only Windows patching.

Incident response

Maintain a usable response plan with contacts, decision roles, escalation paths and dependencies such as legal counsel, broker, insurer, forensics and communications.

Evidence matters

For each material answer, retain the supporting evidence: coverage reports, policy configuration, test results, tickets, risk acceptance or other documentation. This reduces the risk of completing an application based on assumptions.

Important: Insurers and policies vary. This checklist is a security-readiness guide, not insurance or legal advice. Final application responses should match the insurer’s wording and the organization’s actual circumstances.

Review the controls before you answer the questionnaire.
