Microsoft 365 is often the center of business identity, email and data.

A single Microsoft 365 tenant can contain user identities, Exchange Online mailboxes, SharePoint and OneDrive data, Teams collaboration, SaaS application access and administrative roles. That makes tenant configuration a major part of a small or mid-sized organization’s attack surface.

Identity & access

Review MFA coverage, Conditional Access, privileged roles, guest users, legacy authentication exposure, stale identities and access lifecycle practices.

Email & collaboration

Evaluate anti-phishing protections, mailbox forwarding, external sharing, domain authentication, Exchange settings and risky collaboration patterns.

Data & endpoint integration

Review security capabilities across Defender, Intune, device compliance, encryption, sensitivity controls and connected endpoints where included in scope.

What a Microsoft 365 security assessment can review

  • Entra ID authentication and MFA coverage.
  • Conditional Access policy design and exclusions.
  • Global Administrator and other privileged role assignments.
  • Guest accounts, inactive accounts and offboarding controls.
  • Application registrations and enterprise application permissions.
  • Exchange Online anti-phishing, anti-malware and mail-flow configurations.
  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC configuration for business domains.
  • External forwarding and suspicious inbox-rule exposure.
  • SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams external-sharing configuration.
  • Microsoft Defender capabilities enabled by the organization’s licensing.
  • Intune device compliance, encryption and endpoint configuration where applicable.
  • Audit logging, retention and alerting available for security investigations.

We focus on coverage and exceptions—not just whether a feature is enabled.

A policy can exist while users, devices or workloads remain outside its scope. For example, an MFA policy may exclude emergency accounts, service identities or entire user groups. A device-compliance policy may exist while unmanaged devices can still access sensitive cloud data. NCB Cyber reviews both configuration and population coverage so the organization knows what is actually protected.

Useful outcomes from the review

  • Prioritized Microsoft 365 security findings.
  • List of control exclusions and documented exceptions.
  • Recommended remediation steps and ownership.
  • Evidence showing current coverage and implemented changes.
  • Security baseline for future verification.

Microsoft 365 security FAQs

Is enabling MFA enough to secure Microsoft 365?

No. MFA is an important control, but organizations should also evaluate access policies, privileged roles, phishing protections, application permissions, external sharing, endpoint posture, logging and recovery.

Can you review an existing MSP’s Microsoft 365 configuration?

Yes. The engagement can be scoped as an independent security review while the current MSP or internal IT team remains responsible for day-to-day operations.

Can the findings support cyber-insurance or compliance evidence?

They can provide useful technical evidence, depending on what the insurer, customer or framework specifically requests. We avoid treating a configuration review as a legal certification.
